In the whole history of doors, has there ever been one
that has never been opened and always been closed?
If a door is fixed,
is it broken?
A door can serve as a provisional wall.
A wall cannot serve as a provisional door.
I have a photograph of a door hanging on my wall,
but no photograph of a wall hanging on my door.
Walls envy doors,
their ability to reveal or conceal,
how they obstruct or permit,
how they provide a dual purpose,
open or shut,
enter or exit,
coming or going,
closure or disclosure.
Does not a door provoke curiosity?
The other side, what lies beyond?
A door is an invitation to a new room.
But if there is no handle or hinge,
no knob or knocker or jamb,
can we openly call it a door?
It is a wall. Case closed.
Or maybe a test –
a challenge to get through.
