When something he wanted to
happen didn’t happen,

he was not disappointed.

When something he didn’t want to
happen happened,

he was not angered.

When something he wanted to
happen happened.

he was not gleeful.

taught us to lead
well-tempered lives.

Zeno of Citium (334 – 262 BCE) was a Greek philosopher who founded the school of Stoicism,
a way of life practiced by Seneca and the emperor Marcus Aurelius.  Stoics know they have little
control of the world around them, therefore they control themselves as they respond to the world.
