Gratitude for Silence

A word is a sound pressed between two silences.

Without the encircling silence,
speaking a word would be an incomprehensible mumble.

The same for the printed page.
Blank space is needed between words so they can be distinguished one from another.

An atom is composed mainly of space, as is the universe.

A poem is composed mostly of silence,
the silence between words and the silence compressed within words like a diamond.

It takes a lot of silence to make a poem.
