Who is responsible for the major crimes of the 20th century,

the triggermen,

or the one who paid

the triggermen

to pull the triggers?

Unnamed sources have pointed fingers at God.

Forensic accountants are looking into God’s cash flow.
Investigators are interviewing God’s associates.
Detectives are following a long list of leads.
Fingerprint specialists are analyzing smudges.
Blood spatter experts have traced a trajectory.
A judge has issued a bench warrant for God’s arrest.
The prosecutor is building an irrefutable case.

And I get a call from God’s attorney
asking me to be a witness for the defense.

This is a moral dilemma.

I explain to him that the mono-magnificent
apparent singularity of God
in the news and in the pews is a cover for

the polymorphic ,

shape-shifting,

multi-minded

divinity I have come to love with fear.

“You love God, so help him,”
the defense attorney pleads.

“What happen to, ‘so help me God’,” I ask.

“You should be flattered God asked for your help.”
the attorney replied.

“What if I don’t want to?”

God’s lawyer reminded me
of the power
of the subpoena.

I remind him of the oath,
‘the truth, the whole truth,
and nothing but the truth.’

“We’ll take our chances,” he replies.
“Juries will be favorable to God.”

“But how can it be a jury of God’s peers?”

“Interesting point,” God’s defense replies.

On the stand I offer the alibi.

“God is innocent.

for the last fifty seven years
of the 20th century

the God on trial

was with me.”
